ABSTRACT

Telehealth is defined by the American Physical Therapy Association as the use of electronic communications to provide and deliver a host of health-related information and health-care services, including, but not limited to, physical therapy-related content and services over large and small distances. Telehealth encompasses a variety of health-care and health promotion activities, including, but not limited to, education, advice, reminders, interventions, and monitoring of interventions. Telerehabilitation is a form of telemedicine and involves the delivery of therapeutic rehabilitation interventions using telecommunication technologies. This chapter will discuss the current telerehabilitation literature related to physical therapy. In addition, novice telehealth PT practitioners will learn of telerehabilitation resources available from national and international professional associations. By looking at the current evidence and guidelines related to telerehabilitation, we hope to glean future opportunities for practice, research, and education for physical therapy practitioners.
