ABSTRACT

As the number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections among women increases there is likely to be an increasing number of children born to seropositive mothers. Transmission rates ranging from 0-65% have been reported.(1) There are, as yet, no reliable estimates of the risk of infection in a child born to an HIV seropositive mother, but studies are in progress in several countries. At the present time our knowledge is largely based on prospective studies following children presenting with symptoms in the early months or years of life. This group does not represent the majority of HIV-infected children, and further information on the natural history of perinatally acquired infection is required. More... »
