ABSTRACT

Surface epithelial tumors are classified based on tumor cell type (serous, mucinous, endometrioid, clear cell, transitional) and are then further subclassified as benign borderline or malignant (carcinoma). Ovarian surface epithelial carcinoma has five main subtypes: high-grade serous carcinoma, low-grade serous carcinoma, clear cell carcinoma, endometrioid carcinoma, and mucinous carcinoma. In effect, the different subtypes of ovarian carcinoma are different diseases that have in common epithelial lineage and manifestation as an ovarian mass. Accurate diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma subtypes is critical because prognosis and response to chemotherapy differ between different subtypes. This chapter familiarizes the reader with the differences between the ovarian carcinoma subtypes, the prevalence of each subtype, and the disease-specific survival outcomes of each subtype. It also describes the problems in pathological assessment of subtypes and includes a list of overused diagnoses that should be made with trepidation. More... »
