ABSTRACT

Cancer is a complex, dynamical system that includes continuous interactions between evolving cancer cells and their spatially and temporally heterogeneous microenvironment. Despite intense research for decades, a comprehensive model of the cancer system remains elusive. Furthermore, failure to organize the vast extant data on cancer into a comprehensive theoretical framework has undoub­tedly contributed to the steady mortality for cancer in the past 50 years compared to the marked decline observed in, for example, cardiovascular disease.
