ABSTRACTThe importance of mitochondria and plastids to plant cell function has stimulated considerable research in organelle biogenesis over several decades. The basic functions and composition of these organelles are now reasonably well understood, but much remains to be discovered concerning the regulation of organelle activity in different physiological states. Coordination between the nuclear, plastid and mitochondrial compartments is still very poorly understood, as is the assembly of the many multicomponent protein complexes that characterize the internal mitochondrial and plastid membranes. Progress in these areas will in many cases be dependent on techniques that can follow many genes or proteins simultaneously in order to capture the complexity of the system. In this review, we discuss the attempts to apply the latest “omics” approaches to plant organelles, using examples from the literature on plants wherever possible, but with occasional examples from other organisms when new techniques offer special promise.
