ABSTRACT

Pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) is cultivated in all tropical and sub-tropical countries and ranks third in production amongst tropical fruits. In 2002, the world production of pineapple was 14.9 million tonnes, which represents increases of 23% and 43% compared to 1998 and the early 1980s, respectively. Production in Asia is centred in Thailand (ca. 14% of world production), The Philippines (10.6%), China (8.6%) and India (7.3%). Africa, Central America and South America contribute approx. equally to the remainder (1). About 70% of pineapple is consumed as fresh fruit, with The Philippines, Cote d’Ivoire and Costa Rica predominating in the global production of fresh pineapple. Collectively, these 3 countries account for nearly two-thirds of this world trade, estimated to be about 620,000 tonnes and worth about 200 million $US. The European Union is the largest importer of pineapple and handles in excess of 200,000 tonnes annually, of which France consumes about 30%, followed by Germany, Italy and Spain (2). The trade in processed products consists of canned slices (approx. 1.0 million tonnes) and juice (approx. 170,000 tonnes), supplied mainly by Thailand and The Philippines. More... »
