ABSTRACT

A variety of neurones possess Ca-currents (ICa (Hagiwara & Byerly, 1981; Kostyuk, 1981). Mammalian central neurones are no exception: the presence of Ca-currents has been inferred from a variety of Ca-dependent voltage transients (reviewed by Llinas & Walton, 1980), and has been verified directly by voltage-clamp experiments in spinal motoneurones (Schwindt & Crill, 1980a,b) and hippocampal pyramidal cells (Johnston et al., 1980; Brown & Griffith, 1983b). In addition to their role (at terminals) in transmitter release, these currents play an important part in determining the electrical behaviour of brain cells (see Llinas & Walton, 1980; Crill & Schwindt, 1983). Notwithstanding, information about the properties of ICa in central neurones — and particularly their sensitivity to pharmacological agents — is comparatively rudimentary when compared with that available for the equivalent currents in cardiac cells or in invertebrate neurones (see Reuter, 1983).
