ABSTRACT

The end of each of the two World Wars which occurred in the course of the 20th century was marked by the creation of a world organization as guarantor of the post-war status quo and harbinger of a peaceful future. The League of Nations and the United Nations which succeeded it expressed the hopes of their creators that the great evil which brought them into existence would never happen again. In the case of the former, such hopes proved completely wrong. In the case of the UN, things are somewhat more complicated. It is true that no global war has occurred since 1945. But it is also true that the Cold War, which lasted for several decades, often brought international cooperation to a standstill and humanity to the brink of annihilation. More... »
