ABSTRACT

From Bertrand Russell, Portraits from Memory and Other Essays (London: George Allen & Unwin, 1956) pp. 71–5, 100. Despite his claim to have first met Shaw at the 1896 International Socialist Congress (held in St Martin’s Hall, London, between 28 July and 1 August) there was an earlier meeting when they were on holiday with the Webbs in Monmouth in September 1895. (For Shaw’s version of their bicycle smash then, see Collected Letters 1874–1897, pp. 558–9.) He is unlikely to have heard of Shaw before publication of The Quintessence of Ibsenism in September 1891 (although it was based on a paper read to the Fabian Society on 18 July 1890). More... »
