ABSTRACT

The necessity for prolonging the time a patient is sustained by extracorporeal circulation has encouraged, particularly during the past decade, the development of improved blood pumps (Kliměs et al., 1975; Granger et al., 1974 and Kletschka et al., 1975). During the time spent by the authors in Heidelberg, they were instrumental in the development of electronically controlled systems for prolonged oxygenation as well as of diastolic cardiac arrest devices for patients, following open heart surgery (Hankeln et al., 1975).
