ABSTRACT

More ink than blood has been split on the subject of aortic dissections, beginning with the first well-documented case of aortic dissection—George II of England, who died while straining on the commode. Morgagni first described aortic dissection more than 200 years ago. The advent and adoption of modern cardiac surgical procedures have dramatically altered the outcome what was once a uniformly fatal disease. Dramatic advances in imaging the aorta and the heart have facilitated the early diagnosis of aortic dissections. Here we go through the clinical presentation of aortic dissection, by way of history, clinical examination, physical findings, and laboratory investigations. More... »
