ABSTRACT

The globalization of information and communication poses new challenges to this emerging civil society, as it provides new risks of censorship and control, but at the same time offers new opportunities for global networking and collective action. There seems to be very little research on the ways non-government organizations (NGOs) are confronting the information society and its effects. This paper explores current issues on computer-mediated communication (CMC) and virtual communities, and describes the preliminary findings of ongoing research of CMC uses in NGOs in Latin America. These fmdings suggest that an enhanced sense of belonging to a global civil society may be a positive effect of current uses of CMC by NGOs in the region. More... »
