ABSTRACT

We introduce briefly two novel x-ray dichroism spectroscopies which are both element and edge specific. The link between them is the x-ray gyrotropy tensor which is dominated by electric dipole-electric quadrupole interference terms. X-ray natural circular dichroism was first observed in 1997 and can give access to the absolute configuration of chiral centers. Non-reciprocal x-ray linear dichroism has been detected for the first time in December 1999 and may open a new way to study antiferromagnetic systems whose time-space symmetry belongs to one of the 58 magneto-electric groups.
