ABSTRACT

In patients with dysphagia, radiographic studies evaluate both esophageal morphology and esophageal function. Videofluoroscopy accurately diagnoses achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm, and PSS (scleroderma). Videofluoroscopy is less sensitive for the study of nonspecific motor disorders and gastroesophageal reflux. When accuracy, costs, availability, and patient acceptance are considered (Parkman et al. Dig Dis Sci 41:1355–1368, 1996), videofluoroscopy should be the initial diagnostic test for patients with esophageal dysphagia. More... »
