ABSTRACT

The progress in AIDS research has been hampered by the lack of a small and practical animal model susceptible to HIV infection, suitable for a rapid testing of antiviral compounds and vaccines. Over the past 20 years, different attempts have been made to develop various models for AIDS in mice. An ensemble of studies carried out in several laboratories during the past decade by using SCID mice transplanted with human cells and infected with HIV have revealed that these chimeric human-mouse models can indeed represent valuable animal systems for addressing a variety of important issues in AIDS research. 64 schema:description The progress in AIDS research has been hampered by the lack of a small and practical animal model susceptible to HIV infection, suitable for a rapid testing of antiviral compounds and vaccines. Over the past 20 years, different attempts have been made to develop various models for AIDS in mice. An ensemble of studies carried out in several laboratories during the past decade by using SCID mice transplanted with human cells and infected with HIV have revealed that these chimeric human-mouse models can indeed represent valuable animal systems for addressing a variety of important issues in AIDS research.
