The present invention discloses a method for obtaining a cell preparation enriched in mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) comprising obtaining a single cell suspension of a human bone marrow (BM) aspirate, isolating bone marrow mononucleated cells to obtain a cell preparation, and depleting the cell preparation of cells expressing CD44 on their surface; thereby obtaining a cell preparation enriched in MSC.
