ABSTRACT

A method for forming a selective base pair by introducing a dialkylamino group at the base moiety of a nucleic acid so as to create steric hindrance between bases; a method for designing a nucleic acid which can form a selective base pair, which method comprises utilising steric hindrance in the nucleic acid base part of the nucleic acid; optionally wherein the steric hindrance hinders the formation of a base pair with a natural nucleic acid base part, and a nucleic acid designed by such a method.
