ABSTRACT

The tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus is a globally important, invasive species that transmits disease to humans living in tropical regions, including the viruses that cause dengue and chikungunya. New and effective control measures are urgently needed given that 100 million dengue cases can occur annually, and chikungunya epidemics are rapidly increasing in range and frequency. In the wild, tiger mosquitoes naturally carry a bacterium called Wolbachia within the cells of certain body tissues. Professor Steven Sinkins at Lancaster University has developed a new Aedes albopictus strain that carries the Wolbachia bacterium that naturally lives within fruit flies. Under laboratory conditions this new strain is unable to transmit either dengue or chikungunya viruses. In addition, when this strain mates with wild mosquitos none of the eggs hatch, meaning that over time the new strain could replace the wild population with one that is incapable of transmitting dengue and chikungunya to human. This 5 year project will undertake field trials in Malaysia to try to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of this strategy for reducing mosquito borne disease. More... »
