ABSTRACT

For most biological systems static, often low energy, snapshots provided by crystallography do not explain fully how biological macromolecular complexes and polymers work, as certain motions are key for full activity. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is superlative in studying dynamics at atomic resolution over a wide range of timescales and amplitudes. Strong collaborative programmes exist with the Cross-Faculty NMR Centre at Imperial (CFNMR), tackling important biological and b iomedical problems by NMR. However, existing instrumentation within CFNMR is now out-of-date and struggling to support an expanding activity in high resolution structural biology and biopolymer research, as their performance has fallen well behind modern equivalents. Furthermore, we wish to implement new technology that is not possible on current facilities, including solid-state application in membrane proteins, biomaterials and tissue. It has therefore become essential to revitalise these f acilities and ensure that they remain at the forefront of technology; not only to support existing biomedical interests, but also to embrace future collaborations and enhance new ventures.
