ABSTRACT

Among the various abiotic stresses drought and salinity are the major factors that limit crop productivity. Wild populations growing in the Mediterranean basin have, however, been under natural selection for drought resistance for several millennia. Both abiotic and biotic stresses are known to activate transposable elements, particularly retrotransposons and retroviruses. Retrotransposons are important forces in genome remodeling and major components of the genome. In turn, DNA and chromatin methylation is likely an important mechanism in the suppression of retrotransposon activity. The role of methylation in controlling retrotransposon activity under drought stress needs to be understood because it affects plant performance and has epigenetic effects on harvest quality in the following generations. Hence, examination of the genomic effects of drought stress on Mediterranean populations will help us to understand and predict the genomic consequences of climate change. More... »
