ABSTRACT

In the multidisciplinary FinnARCH-project, a wide range of different research methods and approaches from archaeology, history, ancient-DNA-analysis, molecular population genetics, radiocarbon dating, isotope analysis and animal science were adopted to investigate prehistory and dispersal of animal husbandry in Finland. The study focused mainly on ancient cattle and sheep populations whose genetic diversity based on mitochondrial and Y-chromosomal DNA analyses was for the first time examined in the Finnish context. The radiocarbon dating of national animal bone collections indicated that the animal husbandry was practiced in Finland at least from the late Neolithic Stone Age. Moreover, the project provided new information on developmental processes that have shaped important archaeological sites in Finland. More... »
